ALIGHIERO BOETTI: 'MADE BY AFGHANS, FOR AFGHANS'

In this article, we dive into Boetti’s close ties with Afghanistan, based on his heartfelt, handwritten dedication to the country, and more specifically, to the Afghan weavers he worked with, on the back of our most recent acquisition: ‘Made by Afghans, for Afghans’.

Italian conceptual artist Alighiero Boetti is known to have been fascinated with non-western cultures, having travelled to Guatemala, Ethiopia and Sudan between 1974 and 1976, and later, Afghanistan and Pakistan. This passion was not only driven by a quest for innovation in his works but also by his desire to support the local artisans of those communities. In this article, we dive into Boetti’s close ties with Afghanistan, based on his heartfelt, handwritten dedication to the country, and more specifically, to the Afghan weavers he worked with, on the back of our most recent acquisition, ‘Le cose nascono dalla necessità e dal caso’ (1989): ‘Made by Afghans, for Afghans’.
